01 — The Process

John has coached athletes in all corners of the world from the US to UK, Asia to Europe as well as the Middle East, Australia, Poland and New Zealand. Time zones and communication are not an issue with Skype, FaceTime and other tools all available.

John limits the number of athletes he works with to an absolute maximum of 20 at any one time.

The process of applying for coaching

  1. An initial call between John and yourself to ensure that expectations are in alignment from both sides.

  2. Background forms are completed to give John a thorough insight into your past training and racing. Goals (short, medium and long term) are set along with all other administrative tasks.

  3. Training zones are set based on speed, power, pace and heart rate.

  4. John delivers programmes via Training Peaks (a free or paid service)

  5. You’re rolling usually within 10 days.

  6. Coaching fee’s are US$250/mth paid via PayPal or an agreed method.

The ongoing process + level of communication

  • A detailed weekly schedule is set within Training Peaks, usually in 2-4 week blocks at a time.

  • Coach / Athlete chat for 15mins at the start or end of each week for a review and planning session.

    • John will review key sessions within training peaks including power, heart rate and pace analysis.

    • Email communication as required during the week.

  • Adjustments to the training plan are made as required if there are interruptions.

  • A strong emphasis is placed on race planning (nutrition, pace and mental strength).

  • John encourages athletes to work with him on technique by filming themselves and sharing via apps.

02 — FAQ’s

  • Q - I train with a squad for some sessions. Is this OK?

    • A - Training with others generally has more benefits than costs when done properly. As you get closer to key events this need to be managed but in general it is no problem.

  • Q - Will each session be detailed, for example swim sets

    • A - Every session will have detail to some degree so the athletes know what they should be doing. However not every session will be by numbers. It will come down to the individual and what works best for them

  • Q - Do you offer technique help?

    • A - Yes, athletes can have themselves filmed via Hudl Technique and share with Coach John for analysis.

  • Q - Coaching costs - do you offer different levels.

    • A - Some coaches offer gold silver, bronze levels. John only offers one option to ensure you can be the best athlete possible. The monthly coaching fee is USD 250/mth

  • Q - I’m not great with technology and don’t like working with lots of numbers?

    • A - John is going to be able to help you get devices set up and will pitch the statistics to your level of understanding. He will encourage all athletes to train with a power meter and GPS watch. How rigorously you use the devices within training will be adapted but it gives John the information he needs to coach you most effectively.
